Information from the China National Intellectual Property Administration shows that ABB Switzerland Ltd. has filed a patent titled “Method, Controller, Positioning Device and Computer Program for Determining the Position of a Container in a Container Slot of a Container Ship,” with publication number CN121225456A, filed in June 2025.
The patent describes a machine learning and image-processing-based method for determining the precise position of containers on container ships, aiming to improve automation and accuracy in port loading and unloading operations.
According to the filing, the method involves receiving image data from at least one camera installed on the structure of a crane. The crane structure extends at least partially above the container slot area on the vessel, enabling visual coverage of the loading zone. The captured image data includes a first image and at least a second image, each representing the region of the container slot where a container is positioned.
A machine learning algorithm is then used to process the multi-view image data and determine the exact position of the container within the designated slot on the ship.
By combining computer vision with AI-based analysis, the technology improves positioning accuracy, reduces operational errors, and supports the development of more intelligent and automated port logistics systems.
