1. What is the main function of the GE UR 6CV Digital I/O Module?
The GE UR 6CV is a digital output module designed for GE Multilin Universal Relay systems. It provides eight Form-C relay outputs that allow internal protection, monitoring and control logic within the UR relay to be transferred to external electrical equipment. The outputs can be used for alarms, trip commands, breaker control, interlocking and other programmable control functions. 2. How many outputs does the UR 6CV provide?
The UR 6CV provides eight independent Form-C digital outputs. Each output uses an SPDT contact arrangement with common, normally open and normally closed terminals. This allows the same module to support different external circuit configurations depending on whether the application requires a normally energized, normally de-energized or changeover signal. The eight outputs can be individually assigned within the associated Universal Relay configuration. 3. What is the difference between a Form-C output and a standard digital output?
A Form-C output uses a single-pole double-throw relay contact arrangement, providing a common terminal together with normally open and normally closed contacts. This gives the UR 6CV greater flexibility than an output that provides only a normally open contact. Depending on the circuit design, the external control system can use either the NO or NC contact to obtain the required operating behavior. This can be useful for alarm circuits, interlocking schemes and applications where a change in contact state must be detected by external equipment. When wiring a Form-C output, the common, NO and NC terminals must be selected according to the intended control logic, and the actual contact transition should be verified during commissioning.

4. What applications are suitable for the UR 6CV?
The UR 6CV is suitable for power protection, control and automation applications that require multiple relay outputs from a GE Multilin Universal Relay. Typical applications include substation automation, switchgear control, feeder protection, transformer protection, SCADA integration, alarm signaling and interlocking. The outputs can be assigned to protection element operation, equipment status, programmable logic or other internal relay conditions. In a substation, for example, one output may be assigned to a trip circuit while another can be used for an alarm or interlocking function. The final assignment depends on the protection and control philosophy of the particular installation.

5. Can the UR 6CV be used for fast protection and control applications?
The UR 6CV is designed for high-speed digital output operation, with published information indicating I/O update rates of up to 100 kHz. This makes the module suitable for applications where rapid processing and output response are important. However, the actual operating time of a complete protection or control function depends on more than the I/O update rate. Relay processing, protection element operation, programmable logic, output relay characteristics and the connected external circuit can all affect the final response time. For critical protection applications, the complete protection chain should therefore be tested rather than evaluating the UR 6CV solely from its nominal update rate.

6. How is the UR 6CV configured in a GE Universal Relay?
The UR 6CV is installed as a modular I/O component within a compatible GE Multilin Universal Relay system. Once installed, the associated relay configuration assigns individual output channels to protection elements, alarms, control functions or programmable logic. The output logic can be developed using the relay’s programmable logic functions so that specific equipment conditions result in the required relay contact operation. After configuration, each output should be tested individually. The technician should confirm the internal logic indication, the physical state of the Form-C contacts and the response of the external device. This point-to-point verification is especially important when the outputs are connected to breaker trips, control circuits or safety-related interlocks.

7. What should be checked if a UR 6CV output does not operate correctly?
Troubleshooting should begin by determining whether the associated protection or control logic has actually issued an output command. If the programmed condition has not been satisfied, the output may be functioning normally. If the logic command is present, the output assignment and module configuration should then be checked. The physical terminal connections should be inspected for loose wiring, incorrect terminal selection or damaged conductors. The external control circuit should also be checked for control power, fuses and connected equipment faults. If the relay indicates that the output has operated but the external device does not respond, the Form-C contact circuit should be tested directly. If configuration and external wiring are confirmed to be correct, the corresponding output channel or module hardware may require further inspection.

8. What precautions should be taken when replacing a UR 6CV?
Before replacing a UR 6CV, the protection and control system should be placed in the appropriate maintenance condition and electrical isolation should be performed according to site safety procedures. The existing output configuration should be documented before removal, including the purpose of each of the eight outputs and the wiring of the common, NO and NC terminals. This is particularly important when the module is connected to trip, breaker control or interlocking circuits. After installing the replacement module, the module seating and terminal connections should be inspected carefully. The associated UR relay configuration should then be verified, followed by individual testing of all eight outputs.
