1. What is the GE Multilin UR 8GH CT/VT Module used for?
The GE Multilin UR 8GH is a CT/VT module designed for sensitive ground protection applications within the Universal Relay series. It receives current transformer and voltage transformer signals and provides these measurements to the host UR relay for protection, monitoring and electrical measurement functions. Its sensitive-ground configuration makes it particularly suitable for applications where reliable detection of ground faults is important.

2. What CT and VT configuration does the UR 8GH provide?
The UR 8GH uses a sensitive-ground 4 CT / 4 VT configuration. It provides four current transformer inputs and four voltage transformer inputs, allowing the host relay to acquire multiple current and voltage signals from the protected power system. This configuration can support protection schemes involving phase measurements, ground-related measurements and voltage-based protection functions.

3. Does the UR 8GH support both 1 A and 5 A CT secondary circuits?
Yes. The UR 8GH supports 1 A and 5 A CT secondary applications. The selected CT rating must match the actual current transformer secondary circuit and the settings of the host Universal Relay. The CT ratio, secondary rating and polarity should be verified carefully during commissioning because incorrect configuration can affect current measurement accuracy and protection calculations.

4. What is the main advantage of the sensitive-ground function on the UR 8GH?
The sensitive-ground configuration is intended to improve the relay system’s ability to detect ground faults, particularly in applications where the fault current may be relatively low. This can be valuable in power generation, transmission and industrial distribution systems where early identification of ground faults is important for preventing equipment damage and reducing the risk of more serious electrical faults.

5. What VT signals can be connected to the UR 8GH?
The UR 8GH provides four VT inputs designed for AC voltage transformer signals in the specified range of 50–240 V AC. The actual VT secondary voltage and transformer ratio must be compatible with the module and correctly entered into the host relay configuration. Correct VT settings are important for accurate voltage measurement and for protection functions that depend on voltage, phase angle or calculated electrical quantities.

6. How should the UR 8GH be configured in a Universal Relay system?
The module should be configured according to the actual CT and VT characteristics of the protected electrical system. Parameters such as CT secondary rating, CT ratio, VT ratio, system frequency, phase relationships and protection settings should be reviewed before commissioning. EnerVista UR software can be used to configure and monitor the Universal Relay system, while the relay’s local interface can also be used to check relevant settings and measurements.

7. What should be checked if the UR 8GH produces abnormal current or voltage readings?
Start by checking the CT and VT secondary wiring, terminal connections, phase identification and polarity. Confirm that the CT secondary rating, CT ratio, VT ratio and system frequency are correctly configured in the host relay. CT polarity or phase-sequence errors can cause incorrect measurements and may affect directional or ground protection functions. If the external circuits and settings are correct, inspect the module connection and perform appropriate secondary injection testing.

8. What safety precautions should be followed when replacing the UR 8GH?
The protection system should be placed in an appropriate maintenance state before the module is removed or replaced. CT circuits require particular attention because an energized CT secondary circuit must not be opened improperly, as dangerous voltages can be generated. VT circuits should also be isolated according to site safety procedures. After installation, verify all CT and VT connections, review the relay configuration and perform suitable functional or secondary injection tests before returning the protection system to normal operation.
