ABB Launches Ethernet-APL CoriolisMaster Mass Flow Meter For Industrial Digitalization

ABB has introduced the Ethernet-APL-enabled CoriolisMaster mass flow meter, expanding high-speed industrial connectivity for process industries including chemicals, oil and gas, power, and water treatment.

The CoriolisMaster measures mass flow, density, and temperature in a single compact device, delivering high-precision multi-variable measurement. With integrated Ethernet-APL connectivity, it enables seamless integration with control systems and other field devices, creating a high-speed data pathway for process, configuration, and diagnostic information.

This upgrade supports real-time decision-making and predictive maintenance, helping reduce operational errors and unplanned downtime. ABB has now extended Ethernet-APL capability across its flow portfolio, including ProcessMaster, VortexMaster, and SwirlMaster product lines.

According to ABB Measurement & Analytics President, the integration of flow instrumentation with Ethernet-APL represents a key step in industrial digital transformation. The technology improves diagnostics, simplifies commissioning, enhances operational stability, and enables better data-driven decisions.

Ethernet has long been used in industrial environments, but adoption in process industries has been limited due to concerns around safety, cost, and cable length. Ethernet-APL addresses these constraints through a jointly developed standard created by 12 process automation suppliers and four international standards organizations, including ABB.

The technology supports data rates up to 10 Mbps and uses shielded twisted-pair cabling to transmit both power and data over distances up to 1,000 meters. It also includes intrinsic safety features, allowing deployment in hazardous environments.

ABB plans to extend Ethernet-APL across additional field instruments, including pressure and temperature sensors, as part of its broader digital instrumentation roadmap.

Its automation business supports customers across energy, water, materials, manufacturing, and transport sectors, with around 26,000 employees worldwide helping industries improve efficiency, safety, and sustainability.
