ABB And SSAB Strengthen Partnership To Support Fossil-Free Steel Plant Electrification In Sweden

ABB and steel producer SSAB have entered into a major collaboration to deliver the main electrical infrastructure for SSAB’s new fossil-free steel plant in Luleå, Sweden. The scope of the project includes the design, supply, installation, and commissioning of the main power distribution system, ensuring reliable electricity supply across the entire facility. The project marks a significant milestone in SSAB’s transition toward fossil-free steel production.

The new facility will gradually replace SSAB’s existing Luleå steel plant and is scheduled to begin fossil-free steel production by the end of 2029. According to SSAB, the project is expected to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by approximately 2.8 million tons per year, equivalent to around 90% of the current plant’s emissions, and could reduce Sweden’s total national emissions by about 7%.

Between 2025 and 2028, ABB will deliver a comprehensive electrical system solution to support a stable, efficient, and future-ready infrastructure for fossil-free steel production. The scope includes full electrical design, medium- and low-voltage equipment, distribution transformers, uninterruptible power supply (UPS) systems, DC distribution, backup power systems, automation-based electrical control, and monitoring solutions. ABB will also serve as the sole supplier responsible for installation and commissioning.

A reliable power distribution system is critical for SSAB’s transformation, as the new plant will rely on energy-intensive processes such as electric arc furnaces. ABB was involved in the project from an early stage, conducting feasibility studies and system design to ensure stable power delivery from the grid to all areas of the plant. This integrated approach provides a strong foundation for phasing out coal-based steelmaking and scaling fossil-free production.

“ABB has been a long-standing supplier to SSAB for decades. This agreement continues our collaboration, with ABB taking full responsibility for the design, supply, and commissioning of the main electrical infrastructure for the new Luleå steel plant,” said Carl Orrling, Chief Technology Officer and Head of Transformation at SSAB. “ABB’s early involvement and its combination of global expertise and strong local presence were key factors in our decision. With new technology, we expect improved cost efficiency, shorter lead times, and greater flexibility in responding to demand fluctuations. Once the current production line is phased out, our Luleå operations will significantly reduce carbon emissions.”

“Reliable electrification solutions are essential for fossil-free steel production,” said Frederik Esterhuizen, Global Head of Metals and Energy Industries at ABB Process Industries. “From the earliest planning stages, we have worked closely with SSAB to design a power infrastructure that meets today’s requirements while supporting long-term transformation. This end-to-end collaboration ensures that every part of the plant receives stable and efficient power, enabling the transition away from coal-based steelmaking.”

This project continues the long-standing partnership between ABB and SSAB and reinforces ABB’s role as a trusted technology partner supporting the steel and metals industry in its transition toward sustainable and low-carbon operations.
