Honeywell Launches New Infrared Gas Sensor To Enhance Industrial Worker Safety

Honeywell has announced the launch of a new gas sensor based on non-dispersive infrared (NDIR) optical technology, designed to detect combustible gases such as methane, propane, and butane in industrial environments. The new sensor targets industries including mining, oil and gas, petrochemicals, and plastics manufacturing, helping improve on-site safety and ensure stable operations of critical infrastructure.

According to Honeywell, the new 4-series NDIR hydrocarbon gas sensor can be integrated into both fixed and portable gas detection devices used by workers in a wide range of environments, including underground mines, field operations, and industrial facilities.

The sensor is engineered for harsh operating conditions, such as coal dust exposure, methane leakage risks, and extreme temperature variations between indoor and outdoor environments. It features an integrated condensation suppression system that removes excess moisture, enabling stable performance even in high-humidity or confined spaces such as refineries.

Compared with traditional catalytic combustion gas sensors, NDIR technology offers stronger resistance to sensor poisoning, reducing performance degradation and false alarms caused by environmental interference. In addition, the infrared-based design consumes less power, which helps extend both sensor lifespan and battery runtime in portable gas detection equipment.

Honeywell emphasized that accuracy, reliability, and precision are critical in gas detection applications to protect worker safety. The company stated that this new sensor reflects its ongoing innovation in sensing technologies aimed at improving safety standards across high-risk industrial sectors.
