Rockwell Automation has announced the launch of its CompactLogix 5390 controller, expanding its Integrated Architecture portfolio with enhanced performance, integrated safety, and built-in cybersecurity capabilities. Announced on October 13, 2026, the new programmable logic controller (PLC) is designed to help machine builders, original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), and industrial end users address increasingly demanding automation requirements.

As manufacturing systems become more connected and data-intensive, control platforms must do more than execute machine logic. Manufacturers also need to manage operational safety, cybersecurity, equipment integration, and increasingly complex production processes. The CompactLogix 5390 is intended to bring these requirements together in a compact control platform.

Compact PLC Design for Modern Industrial Automation

One of the key features highlighted by Rockwell Automation is the controller’s reduced physical footprint. According to the company, the CompactLogix 5390 is 43% smaller than previous CompactLogix 5380 controllers. This reduction can help machine builders optimize control cabinet layouts, particularly where multiple controllers, drives, power supplies, and communication devices must fit into limited space.

A smaller controller footprint may also help OEMs standardize electrical cabinet designs across different machine models. However, the final cabinet layout should still account for heat dissipation, wiring clearance, power requirements, maintenance access, and applicable electrical installation standards.

The controller also supports local PointMax I/O, enabling more modular automation architectures. Distributed or modular I/O can help engineers organize field signals around machine sections, simplify wiring, and support equipment configurations that need to scale with changing production requirements.

Integrated Safety and Industrial Cybersecurity

Cybersecurity is becoming a major consideration in PLC selection as industrial equipment increasingly exchanges information with plant networks, supervisory systems, and enterprise applications.

Rockwell Automation states that CompactLogix 5390 includes built-in security capabilities aligned with IEC 62443-4-2 and is designed to support readiness for the European Union Cyber Resilience Act. These features are intended to help machine builders address evolving security expectations while reducing the complexity of machine architecture.

Nevertheless, secure hardware alone cannot guarantee a secure installation. Manufacturers should also implement appropriate network segmentation, account management, access restrictions, software updates, backup procedures, and incident-response plans. Security requirements should be reviewed throughout the equipment lifecycle.

Integrated safety capabilities are another part of the new platform. For machine builders, combining control and safety functions within a coordinated architecture may simplify engineering and help reduce integration effort. The actual safety configuration must still be selected and validated according to the machine’s risk assessment and applicable standards.

Integration with Rockwell Automation Systems

The CompactLogix 5390 is designed to work within Rockwell Automation’s Integrated Architecture ecosystem. The company identifies compatibility with PointMax I/O, Kinetix motion solutions, PowerFlex drives, Stratix industrial networking technologies, FactoryTalk Design Studio software, and visualization solutions.

This ecosystem can be relevant to packaging equipment, material handling systems, machine automation, and other applications that require coordinated control, motion, operator interfaces, and production data.

Before specifying the controller for a new project, engineers should verify supported hardware combinations, software versions, communication requirements, I/O capacity, motion needs, and migration considerations. These checks are particularly important when integrating new equipment with an existing PLC or SCADA infrastructure.

What the CompactLogix 5390 Means for PLC Buyers

The launch highlights several priorities in modern PLC development: compact hardware, modular I/O, integrated safety, and cybersecurity built into the control platform.

For OEMs and system integrators, the most suitable controller depends on application complexity, performance requirements, expansion plans, maintenance capabilities, and total lifecycle cost. Comparing these factors before purchasing can help avoid unnecessary redesign and commissioning delays.

As industrial automation continues to evolve, PLC platforms that combine dependable machine control with stronger security and flexible integration will remain important to manufacturers seeking scalable and maintainable production systems.
