ABB Modernizes Nuclear Plant Automation System To Support Long-Term Operation

ABB is carrying out a major industrial automation modernization project at Romania’s Cernavodă Nuclear Power Plant, supporting the long-term operation of Unit 1. The project involves modernization of the plant’s control and safety systems and is designed to support an additional 30 years of operation.

The project uses ABB Ability System 800xA distributed control system technology as part of the modernization program. In a nuclear power environment, automation systems are critical because they provide monitoring, control and coordination for complex plant processes. Modern control technologies must also meet demanding requirements for reliability, safety, cybersecurity and long-term maintainability.

For the industrial automation industry, the project highlights an important trend: modernization does not always mean replacing an entire plant. Many process industries continue to operate equipment and control infrastructure that has been installed for decades. Updating DCS, control, safety and cybersecurity technologies can provide a practical path toward extending the operating life of existing facilities.

The Cernavodă project is also an example of how DCS technology is being applied in critical infrastructure. Modern distributed control systems can integrate process information, operator interfaces, engineering functions and cybersecurity capabilities into a unified automation environment. This can help plant operators manage increasingly complex systems while maintaining established operational procedures.

For international automation suppliers and system integrators, the project demonstrates the continuing importance of lifecycle services in the DCS market. Large industrial facilities often require engineering, migration planning, system integration, testing and commissioning rather than simply purchasing new hardware.

As aging power and process facilities require modernization, technologies such as DCS, safety systems, industrial networks and cybersecurity solutions are expected to remain important components of industrial digital transformation.
