ABB To Power Two Oceanco Superyachts With Next-Generation Electric Propulsion Systems

ABB will equip two new Oceanco superyachts with integrated electric power and propulsion systems, advancing the shift toward quieter, more efficient, and lower-emission luxury vessels.

The Dutch shipbuilder, known for delivering some of the world’s most iconic superyachts, is working with ABB to integrate its Azipod electric pod propulsion technology into next-generation vessels designed for ultra-high efficiency and near-silent operation.

The new superyachts, measuring around 122 meters in length, are being engineered with a strong focus on noise reduction, vibration control, and smooth maneuverability. The goal is to create onboard comfort comparable to luxury automotive cabins, while significantly improving energy efficiency and operational performance.

The integrated solution includes ABB Azipod propulsion units, a DC power distribution system, energy storage systems, and ABB’s PEMS energy management platform. Together, these technologies optimize onboard energy flow, support hybrid operation, and enable the use of alternative fuels.

The energy storage system also plays a key role in load balancing and peak shaving, reducing fuel consumption and emissions by improving generator efficiency and operational stability. A remote diagnostics system further enhances performance monitoring, predictive maintenance, and real-time system optimization.

Each yacht will feature twin 4.2 MW Azipod units with ice-class capability, designed to operate smoothly even in challenging maritime conditions. By eliminating mechanical transmission losses, the gearless electric propulsion system improves efficiency while reducing noise and vibration compared to traditional shaft-driven systems.

The vessels are scheduled for delivery in 2031 and 2032 and will incorporate ABB’s DC grid architecture, enabling flexible power distribution and readiness for hybrid propulsion and alternative fuel integration.

Oceanco CEO Marcel Onkenhout said the collaboration reflects the growing demand for yachts that combine efficiency, comfort, and sustainability, highlighting the importance of integrated electric propulsion systems in achieving these goals.

ABB Marine & Ports President Rune Braastad added that the partnership strengthens the long-standing relationship between the two companies and demonstrates a shared commitment to cleaner and more efficient marine operations.

ABB has previously supplied propulsion systems for Oceanco yachts and continues to collaborate on advanced marine technologies, including next-generation propulsion concepts aimed at improving efficiency and sustainability in the superyacht sector.
