The rapid expansion of artificial intelligence infrastructure is creating a new demand for advanced industrial automation technologies. Emerson is expanding the application of its DeltaV automation platform into high-performance data center infrastructure, where precise control of power, cooling and mechanical systems is becoming increasingly important.

Modern AI data centers can contain thousands of monitoring and control points. High-density computing equipment generates significantly more heat than many traditional IT environments, creating new challenges for cooling systems, electrical distribution and facility-wide energy management.

Emerson’s DeltaV automation technology is designed to provide a unified control environment for these complex infrastructure systems. The platform can coordinate thermal, mechanical, electrical and power systems while providing real-time monitoring and operational visibility.

One of the major challenges in AI data center operations is cooling. Chillers, cooling towers, pumps, fans, CRAH units and CRAC units must work together to maintain stable temperatures as computing workloads change. The data center market could therefore become an important new application area for industrial automation suppliers. As AI computing capacity expands, the infrastructure supporting these facilities will require more sophisticated control strategies.

For automation engineers, the key lesson is that PLC, DCS, SCADA, industrial networking and instrumentation technologies are increasingly being applied across new industries. Data centers are becoming complex industrial environments where power management, cooling control, equipment monitoring and cybersecurity must operate together.

This trend also creates opportunities for suppliers of PLC modules, I/O systems, industrial controllers, sensors, communication modules and DCS components. As AI infrastructure continues to expand, demand for reliable automation technologies capable of managing high-density power and cooling systems is likely to remain an important area of development for the global automation industry.
