Siemens Creates New Automation Business Unit To Accelerate Industrial AI And Software-Defined Automation

Siemens has announced a major organizational change that highlights how rapidly industrial automation is evolving toward artificial intelligence, software-defined control, and autonomous production. On August 12, 2026, Siemens announced that it will establish a new Automation business unit effective October 1, bringing together Factory Automation, Motion Control, Process Automation, and Customer Services under one organization.

Rainer Brehm has been appointed President of the new Automation unit. He will report directly to Cedrik Neike, CEO of Siemens Digital Industries. The new structure is designed to bring Siemens’ key automation technologies closer together and support customers seeking more flexible, productive, and resilient industrial operations.

For the global PLC and industrial control market, the announcement is significant because it shows that automation is no longer being developed as a collection of isolated technologies. PLC controllers, motion systems, process control, industrial software, engineering tools, and AI increasingly need to operate as one connected automation architecture.

Siemens has been investing heavily in this direction throughout 2026. Its strategy combines traditional automation hardware with software-defined automation, Industrial Edge, digital twins, industrial AI, and intelligent engineering tools. The company has also expanded its Industrial Edge ecosystem to integrate data, AI, cybersecurity, and IT/OT connectivity across industrial environments.

This development is particularly relevant to manufacturers operating complex production lines and process plants. Traditional PLC systems remain essential for deterministic control, while AI and advanced analytics can provide additional capabilities such as predictive maintenance, process optimization, anomaly detection, and decision support.

For DCS applications, the same trend is becoming increasingly important. Process industries such as oil and gas, chemicals, power generation, pharmaceuticals, and water treatment require highly reliable control platforms, but they are also looking for better access to operational data and more intelligent optimization tools.

The creation of a unified Siemens Automation business therefore reflects a broader industry movement: the convergence of PLC, DCS, motion control, industrial software, edge computing, and AI.

For automation engineers and system integrators, this shift could lead to more integrated engineering workflows and stronger connections between the controller level and higher-level software platforms. It may also accelerate the adoption of software-defined control architectures in new industrial projects.
