ABB is strengthening its position in industrial and process automation through a planned acquisition of Rotork, a global supplier of intelligent flow-control solutions and electric actuators. ABB announced the recommended cash offer on July 16, 2026, describing the transaction as a strategic move to expand its automation offering for large and complex industrial infrastructure.

Under the proposed transaction, ABB offered 503 pence per Rotork share, implying an enterprise value of approximately $5.5 billion. Rotork’s products are widely associated with mission-critical flow control, instrumentation, and electric actuation, making the business highly complementary to ABB’s existing automation portfolio.
The planned acquisition is particularly relevant to process automation because actuators and intelligent field devices sit close to the physical process. They control valves and other equipment that directly influence the movement of liquids, gases, steam, and other process media.
ABB said the combination would strengthen its position at the field-device layer and enhance the traditional sense-control-act automation loop. In a modern industrial plant, sensors collect process information, controllers such as PLCs and DCS systems make control decisions, and actuators execute those decisions in the physical environment.
Adding more intelligent field devices can therefore create a stronger connection between field equipment and higher-level automation systems.
The potential benefits are significant for industries such as oil and gas, chemicals, power generation, water and wastewater, mining, and other process-intensive applications. These sectors increasingly require not only reliable control but also better diagnostics, asset management, predictive maintenance, and lifecycle visibility.
ABB expects Rotork to operate as a separate division within its Automation business area if the transaction closes. The company also highlighted opportunities to accelerate intelligent device diagnostics and asset-management capabilities through ABB’s digital platforms.
For PLC and DCS engineers, this development demonstrates how the industrial automation architecture is expanding beyond controllers and traditional I/O systems. Intelligent sensors, actuators, drives, instrumentation, edge devices, and software are becoming increasingly important parts of the automation ecosystem.
This trend is also connected to the growing demand for predictive maintenance. Instead of waiting for a valve, actuator, motor, or instrument to fail, intelligent field devices can provide operating information that helps maintenance teams identify abnormal conditions earlier.

The planned ABB-Rotork combination therefore represents more than a conventional corporate acquisition. It reflects the direction of modern process automation, where field-level intelligence is becoming increasingly connected to PLC, DCS, SCADA, asset-management, and industrial software platforms.
