Universal Robots has introduced its new Gen 7 robotics platform at IMTS 2026 in Chicago, marking a significant development in collaborative robotics and AI-ready industrial automation. The new platform is designed to make advanced robotic applications easier to deploy while improving connectivity between robots, software and other factory automation equipment.

The Gen 7 platform represents a comprehensive redesign rather than a simple robot hardware update. Universal Robots has reworked key components including the robot controller, teach pendant and tool flange, while continuing to use its PolyScope X operating system as the software foundation. The company is positioning the platform for manufacturers that want to move artificial intelligence and physical AI applications from development environments into real production.
One important feature is the increased integration between robotics software and industrial control. PolyScope X supports PLC-style background logic that can run alongside the main robot program. This allows engineers to coordinate multiple components within a work cell, exchange data and manage peripheral equipment with less dependence on additional control hardware in some applications.
The Gen 7 platform also introduces the SP7 Smart Panel, which provides a local interface near the robot tool flange. Operators can perform selected teaching and programming functions closer to the workpiece, potentially reducing setup time in applications involving frequent product changes.
For manufacturers, the development is particularly relevant to machine tending, assembly, material handling, inspection, packaging and flexible manufacturing. These applications often require robots to communicate with sensors, vision systems, conveyors, PLCs and other automation equipment.
Cybersecurity and functional safety are also becoming increasingly important as industrial robots become more connected. The Gen 7 platform has been developed with industrial safety and cybersecurity requirements in mind, reflecting the growing need to connect robotics with wider factory networks without creating unnecessary operational risk.
The launch also highlights a broader trend in industrial automation: robots are increasingly becoming software-defined automation platforms rather than isolated mechanical machines. As manufacturers adopt AI, machine vision and connected production systems, the ability to integrate robots with PLCs, industrial networks and digital applications will become an increasingly important factor in automation system design.

For global manufacturers and system integrators, Gen 7 demonstrates how the next generation of collaborative robots and industrial automation systems is moving toward easier programming, stronger connectivity and practical AI deployment.
