The rapid expansion of artificial intelligence is creating new requirements for electrical infrastructure, automation, power distribution, and energy management. ABB has introduced its Infinitus portfolio, a direct-current solution designed to address the increasing power requirements of AI data centers.

The portfolio focuses on a source-to-rack direct-current architecture intended to improve flexibility and energy efficiency while reducing the physical footprint of power infrastructure. The solution combines advanced power conversion technology with DC power distribution and protection technologies.

The development reflects a broader change in the industrial technology landscape. AI data centers require significant amounts of electrical power as well as sophisticated infrastructure for power conversion, cooling, monitoring, protection, and control.

From an industrial automation perspective, modern data centers increasingly require coordinated monitoring and control of electrical systems, cooling equipment, power conversion systems, backup power equipment, and other critical infrastructure. Industrial controllers, sensors, communication networks, and supervisory systems can all contribute to reliable operation.

The technology can also have applications beyond data centers, including industrial buildings, manufacturing facilities, renewable energy installations, and marine operations. This demonstrates how power automation and digital control technologies are expanding into new application areas.

For PLC, DCS, power-control, and industrial electrical equipment suppliers, the growth of AI infrastructure creates additional demand for reliable control hardware and communication solutions. Energy management, electrical automation, condition monitoring, and integrated control are becoming increasingly important as industrial facilities become more electrified and digitally connected.

As AI computing continues to expand, the relationship between power infrastructure, industrial automation, digital control, and energy efficiency will become increasingly important. This trend is creating new opportunities for automation technologies across data centers, manufacturing plants, and other energy-intensive industrial environments.
