Siemens is accelerating the integration of artificial intelligence into industrial automation with its Eigen Engineering Agent, an AI-powered engineering tool designed specifically for automation projects. The technology connects with Siemens TIA Portal and is designed to help engineers perform tasks such as PLC programming, HMI development, hardware configuration, testing and engineering documentation.

Unlike traditional AI assistants that mainly provide suggestions or generate isolated pieces of code, the Eigen Engineering Agent is designed to understand the context of an actual automation project. It can work with existing project structures, including PLC blocks, data types, HMI screens and hardware configurations. This approach allows generated engineering results to better match the architecture and standards of a specific automation system.

For PLC engineers and system integrators, this development could change how automation projects are designed and maintained. Repetitive programming activities, configuration tasks and documentation can require significant engineering time, especially for large production lines with multiple PLCs, drives, sensors and HMI systems. AI-assisted engineering can help automate parts of these workflows while engineers remain responsible for system-level decisions and validation.

Siemens is also expanding the capabilities of its AI engineering technology, including integration with additional engineering workflows and standards-based project generation. This extends AI support into more stages of the industrial automation engineering lifecycle.

The development reflects a broader change in industrial automation. AI is moving from a general-purpose productivity tool toward technology that can be integrated directly into PLC engineering environments. For manufacturers, OEMs and automation integrators, the combination of PLC technology, engineering software and industrial AI may become increasingly important for reducing repetitive work and managing increasingly complex automation projects.
