Operational technology cybersecurity is becoming an increasingly important issue for industrial automation as more PLCs, DCS platforms, sensors, industrial networks and connected devices become part of digital production environments.

Recent industry research has highlighted a significant gap between organizations’ confidence in their OT cybersecurity programs and their actual visibility into industrial assets. A large proportion of surveyed organizations consider their OT cybersecurity programs mature, while a much smaller percentage report having a complete inventory of their OT assets.
This difference is important because asset visibility is a fundamental part of protecting industrial control environments. Without a clear understanding of which PLCs, controllers, engineering stations, HMIs, network devices and other industrial assets are connected to an OT network, it can be difficult to identify vulnerabilities and respond effectively to security incidents.
Cybersecurity incidents can also have direct consequences for manufacturing and process operations. Unlike conventional IT environments, industrial control systems can influence physical equipment and production processes. A disruption affecting an industrial network may therefore result in production interruptions, equipment availability problems or operational downtime.
Artificial intelligence is another major development in the OT security landscape. Industrial organizations are increasingly examining how AI can support threat detection, anomaly monitoring and security operations. At the same time, many companies are still evaluating how autonomous security technologies can be safely introduced into operational environments.
For PLC and DCS users, this trend creates a stronger need for asset visibility, network monitoring, access control and secure system architecture. Cybersecurity should also be considered during PLC upgrades, DCS modernization and industrial network expansion rather than being treated as a separate IT activity.

As factories become more connected, collaboration between automation engineers, OT specialists, network engineers and cybersecurity teams will become increasingly important. Industrial cybersecurity is therefore becoming an essential part of modern PLC, DCS and process automation projects.
