ABB Robotics And Mettler-Toledo Drive Laboratory Automation From Blueprint To Reality

As science and technology continue to advance, laboratory automation has become one of the most discussed topics across global industries. At the same time, the gap between vision and real-world implementation is becoming increasingly evident.

On one side, there is a rapidly strengthening industry consensus. From pharmaceuticals and new energy to product development and quality control, automation is widely regarded as an inevitable direction for the future of laboratory operations.

On the other side, laboratory reality remains fragmented. Many scientists still manually handle samples, repeatedly adjust data formats, and wait for instrument results—spending valuable time on repetitive, low-value tasks instead of focusing on scientific innovation.

Recently, ABB Robotics and Mettler-Toledo jointly released the first volume of their global white paper series, “The Path Toward the Future Automated Laboratory.” Based on in-depth “Voice of Customer” research across biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, chemicals, new energy, and electronics industries, the report systematically outlines the current status of laboratory automation, key barriers, and core driving forces.

The study highlights a recurring challenge: system integration remains the most difficult obstacle. Respondents noted that different platforms often “speak different languages,” leading to poor communication between systems and operational inefficiencies. The collaboration between ABB Robotics and Mettler-Toledo directly addresses this long-standing issue of fragmentation in laboratory environments.

This partnership is far more than a simple “robot plus balance” hardware combination. In 2023, the two companies jointly developed an automated workstation that deeply integrates ABB’s GoFa collaborative robot with Mettler-Toledo’s LabX™ laboratory software platform.

By combining ABB Robotics’ flexibility, ease of use, and precision with LabX™ capabilities in secure data acquisition, method control, and instrument management, the solution significantly improves laboratory productivity. It also reduces system complexity while meeting strict requirements for data integrity, quality, and regulatory compliance.

While manual powder weighing, sample transfer, and data transcription continue to consume generations of scientists’ time, and while exposure risks from highly active substances and repetitive strain injuries remain hidden operational costs, this white paper represents the first joint response from ABB Robotics and Mettler-Toledo. It also provides a practical roadmap for laboratories actively exploring automation.

Since signing a Memorandum of Understanding in 2024, the strategic collaboration between ABB Robotics and Mettler-Toledo has made tangible progress. Together, the companies have delivered laboratory automation solutions to leading global new energy enterprises and top pharmaceutical R&D and manufacturing organizations (CDMOs).

In a leading global new energy laboratory, the jointly developed automation system enables formulation processes with up to three times higher efficiency. The system achieves weighing accuracy that meets industry-standard requirements and can also be deployed inside glovebox environments to enable fully isolated operations. This significantly enhances personnel safety while reducing repetitive labor, human error, and occupational health risks.

In a leading CDMO laboratory in China, the automated powder dispensing station has doubled efficiency compared to manual processes. It delivers weighing accuracy that meets pharmaceutical industry standards and complies with GMP requirements, effectively reducing manual errors and minimizing the loss of high-value pharmaceutical materials.

Looking ahead, the collaboration is entering a new phase of development. A next-generation, ready-to-use robotic powder weighing laboratory workstation is set to be launched soon, marking a significant upgrade from standalone automation to a full-process quality and service ecosystem.

Co-developed by both companies, the system is designed to eliminate workflow bottlenecks in R&D and quality control laboratories while significantly improving operational efficiency. Built on a modular and scalable architecture, it integrates ABB Robotics control systems with Mettler-Toledo’s LabX software, enabling flexible configuration, seamless adaptation to evolving laboratory environments, and consistently high-quality standardized workflows.
