ABB has officially launched the Automation Extended program as a strategic upgrade to its Distributed Control System (DCS). The initiative is designed to enable industries to achieve seamless, non-disruptive system modernization. Built on ABB’s long-standing expertise in process automation and forward-looking technological vision, Automation Extended outlines a gradual path toward next-generation automation—enhancing flexibility, scalability, and operational efficiency while maintaining system integrity.

Industrial operations today face increasing challenges, including market volatility, rising cybersecurity risks, stricter regulatory requirements, and rapid shifts in workforce structure. ABB Automation Extended directly addresses these challenges by enabling agile innovation without interrupting production. It supports the integration of advanced analytics and Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) technologies while simplifying operational workflows to accommodate users with varying skill levels.

Operators can continue to rely on trusted ABB systems such as ABB Ability™ 800xA®, ABB Ability™ Symphony® Plus, and ABB Freelance, while gradually adopting new technologies without operational downtime. This phased approach provides a structured and low-risk modernization pathway that ensures business continuity while enabling continuous innovation.

According to ABB’s Automation Division leadership, many industries rely on large-scale, mission-critical infrastructure. Customers require modernization without compromising ongoing operations. Automation Extended is designed precisely for this need—embedding future-ready capabilities into trusted systems, with security and interoperability at its core.

Automation Extended is implemented through a modern, open, and modular architecture designed for interoperability, scalability, and seamless integration across industrial domains. Based on a “separation of concerns” principle, the ecosystem consists of two independent yet securely connected environments:

Control Environment: A software-defined domain delivering robust, reliable, and deterministic control for critical industrial processes.

Digital Environment: Securely connected to the control layer, this environment enables advanced applications, edge intelligence, and real-time analytics. It leverages AI and machine learning to support decision-making without disrupting the stable control architecture.

ABB provides a unified lifecycle management and service framework to support the operation and maintenance of both environments, ensuring continuous optimization across the entire ecosystem.

By integrating key technologies such as OPC UA unified communication standards and a cloud-native architecture—leveraging containerization, orchestration, and modular services—the system enhances capabilities across multiple dimensions. These include proactive detection and correction of process anomalies, predictive maintenance through continuous asset monitoring, and improved engineering efficiency via modular deployment across diverse hardware platforms. This architecture ensures both robust performance and high agility.

Looking ahead, customers will gain access to Automation Extended capabilities through future updates of ABB Ability™ 800xA®, ABB Ability™ Symphony® Plus, and ABB Freelance process automation systems.
