Bosch Rexroth and AMD are working together to advance industrial artificial intelligence and software-defined automation through the ctrlX OS ecosystem. The collaboration focuses on bringing computing and AI capabilities closer to industrial machines, supporting manufacturers that want to integrate more intelligent functions into their existing automation environments.

Industrial AI is becoming an important topic for machine builders and factory operators. Traditional automation systems rely on carefully programmed control logic to execute predictable sequences, monitor inputs, and coordinate machine movements. AI-based applications can complement these functions by helping process large amounts of data, identify patterns, and support more adaptive decision-making.

Bosch Rexroth’s ctrlX OS is a Linux-based operating system designed for industrial automation applications. The company states that ctrlX OS supports a broad range of AMD embedded processors, creating a foundation for software-based automation solutions across different hardware platforms.

One potential advantage of this approach is greater flexibility in machine architecture. Instead of depending entirely on a single fixed combination of hardware and software, machine builders can develop applications around an adaptable software environment. This may simplify the integration of selected computing, visualization, connectivity, and data-processing functions, depending on the supported hardware and application requirements.

Moving industrial AI closer to the machine can also reduce the need to send every data point to a remote server for processing. In suitable applications, local computing can support faster responses, improve access to machine information, and reduce dependence on continuous cloud connectivity. However, performance depends on processor capacity, application design, network conditions, and the amount of data being processed.

For PLC engineers and automation specialists, software-defined automation does not eliminate the need for deterministic control or validated safety functions. Conventional PLCs, motion controllers, industrial I/O, drives, and safety systems remain essential for many production applications. AI functions should be integrated with clear boundaries between analytical recommendations and safety-critical machine control.

Potential applications include condition monitoring, machine diagnostics, predictive maintenance, industrial vision, and production-data analysis. For example, AI-assisted analysis may help identify unusual vibration patterns or detect recurring machine faults. Engineers can then use these findings to investigate the underlying cause and plan maintenance before a problem leads to unplanned downtime.

System integrators will need to consider processor compatibility, software support, industrial communication protocols, cybersecurity, lifecycle management, and the validation of any AI-assisted functions. Open software architectures can offer flexibility, but successful implementation still requires engineering discipline and appropriate testing.

The Bosch Rexroth and AMD collaboration reflects the broader industrial trend toward combining established automation technology with more adaptable computing platforms. For manufacturers, the objective is not simply to introduce AI, but to use it where it can deliver practical benefits without compromising reliability.

For industrial automation suppliers, this trend may create opportunities in embedded controllers, industrial PCs, PLC systems, I/O modules, motion control, industrial networking, and software integration. As more intelligence moves toward the machine level, interoperability and long-term support will remain important factors in automation investment decisions.
