Schneider Electric has introduced EcoStruxure Foxboro Software Defined Automation (SDA), a new software-defined distributed control system (DCS) designed to support the modernization of process industries. Announced in September 2026, the platform combines the established Foxboro DCS architecture with an open, software-oriented automation approach.

The development reflects a major direction in industrial automation: manufacturers and process plants are increasingly looking for control systems that can integrate more easily with modern software, industrial networks, cybersecurity technologies and data-driven applications.
Traditional DCS platforms have typically been designed around dedicated hardware and tightly integrated control architectures. Software-defined automation takes a different approach by placing greater emphasis on software flexibility, open technologies and the ability to evolve automation infrastructure over time. For industrial operators, this can be important when upgrading existing plants without completely replacing established control assets.
The new Schneider Electric platform is designed to provide real-time process control while supporting openness and embedded cybersecurity. This approach can be particularly relevant to industries such as oil and gas, chemicals, power generation, pharmaceuticals, water treatment and other continuous-process applications where reliability and operational continuity are essential.
The development also highlights the increasing convergence between DCS, industrial software, edge computing and artificial intelligence. Modern automation systems are no longer used only to control valves, motors and process equipment. They are becoming important sources of operational data that can be used for predictive maintenance, energy optimization and production analysis.
For engineers and system integrators, software-defined DCS technology may also change how future automation projects are designed. Instead of focusing exclusively on control hardware, automation teams increasingly need to consider networking, cybersecurity, software architecture, data integration and lifecycle management.

The introduction of EcoStruxure Foxboro SDA therefore represents more than a new DCS product. It reflects the industry’s broader movement toward flexible, connected and software-driven industrial automation.
As industrial facilities continue to modernize their control infrastructure, technologies that combine reliable process control with open software architecture are expected to become increasingly important for long-term plant automation strategies.
