Siemens And Battery-NY Advance Digital Battery Manufacturing With Industrial Automation

The battery manufacturing industry is moving toward a new generation of digitalized production, and industrial automation is becoming a key factor in making battery production more flexible, scalable, and efficient.

Siemens is collaborating with Battery-NY to establish a standardized automation and digital manufacturing architecture for a flexible battery development and pilot manufacturing facility in upstate New York. The project is designed to connect battery research with real-world industrial production while reducing the complexity normally associated with integrating equipment from different machine builders.

One of the biggest challenges in battery manufacturing is the large number of machines involved in the production process. Mixing, coating, calendaring, slitting, cell assembly, formation, and cycling equipment may come from different suppliers and use different control and data systems. Without a standardized automation strategy, manufacturers can face complicated PLC integration, inconsistent data structures, and expensive engineering work.

The project places automation and data architecture at the foundation of the manufacturing facility. Siemens will support the IT/OT architecture and industrial data foundation, while its Battery Automation Framework provides a reference for standardizing equipment interfaces and automation processes.

This approach can provide several benefits for modern battery manufacturers. A common industrial data structure can improve production visibility, quality monitoring, traceability, and material genealogy. It can also make it easier for engineers to connect production equipment with manufacturing software and future digital twin applications.

Digital Twin technology is particularly important for battery manufacturing because production processes require continuous optimization. Engineers can use digital models to evaluate equipment behavior, production parameters, and process changes before implementing them on physical machines. This can help reduce commissioning risks and shorten the time required to introduce new production technologies.

The project also demonstrates how PLC and automation systems are evolving beyond traditional machine control. Modern industrial automation increasingly acts as a foundation for collecting, organizing, and using production data.

For manufacturers building new battery facilities, automation should not be added after the production line is installed. PLC systems, industrial networks, data architecture, MES platforms, and digital twin technologies need to be considered together from the beginning.

As global demand for batteries continues to develop, standardized industrial automation could become an important competitive advantage. Flexible production systems can help manufacturers introduce new battery technologies faster while maintaining better control over quality, production data, and engineering costs.
