ABB is expanding its industrial automation portfolio through a recommended cash acquisition of Rotork, a major move that could strengthen ABB’s position in process automation, flow control, and intelligent industrial equipment.

ABB announced the transaction in July 2026, offering 503 pence in cash per Rotork share. The proposed transaction values Rotork at an enterprise value of approximately $5.5 billion.

Rotork is known for intelligent flow control technologies, including actuators and control solutions used in industries such as oil and gas, water and wastewater, power, chemical processing, and other industrial applications.

The acquisition is strategically significant because industrial automation is increasingly moving toward integrated control of physical processes. Modern plants require not only PLCs and DCS platforms, but also intelligent valves, actuators, sensors, drives, instrumentation, and communication systems.

By expanding its automation portfolio, ABB can strengthen the connection between process control and field-level equipment. In a modern process plant, for example, a DCS may supervise the overall process while intelligent actuators and valves execute precise physical control actions in pipelines and process equipment.

This integration is becoming increasingly important as industrial companies focus on improving plant efficiency, reliability, predictive maintenance, and digital visibility.

For PLC and DCS engineers, the development highlights the growing importance of field devices within industrial automation architectures. Automation is no longer limited to the controller itself.
