Emerson has introduced a new DeltaV Automation Platform for Data Centers, targeting the growing automation requirements created by artificial intelligence and high-performance computing infrastructure.

Announced on August 3, 2026, the platform is designed to provide unified monitoring and control for critical data center infrastructure. It brings together thermal, mechanical, and electrical systems within a scalable automation architecture.

The development reflects a significant change in the industrial automation market. As AI applications require increasingly powerful computing infrastructure, data centers are facing rapidly changing electrical loads, higher cooling requirements, and increasingly complex facility operations. Traditional point-to-point control architectures can make these systems more difficult to integrate and manage.

Emerson’s approach is based on combining distributed control system technology with programmable logic controllers and intelligent software. The DeltaV DCS provides centralized control across critical infrastructure, while DeltaV PLCs can provide fast local control for individual equipment and subsystems.

One of the key objectives is to simplify engineering and commissioning. Instead of relying on multiple independent automation systems, the platform is designed to provide a common control environment. This can help engineering teams standardize equipment-level and facility-wide control while reducing the complexity of system integration.

The platform also incorporates AI-enabled technologies intended to provide operational insights and support more efficient control decisions. For AI-scale data centers, where cooling and power demand can change rapidly, real-time visibility is becoming increasingly important.

This development is particularly relevant to engineers working with PLC, DCS, SCADA, HVAC, electrical control, and industrial networking technologies. Data centers are increasingly adopting automation concepts traditionally associated with process industries and manufacturing plants.

The convergence between industrial automation and data center infrastructure is also creating new opportunities for automation suppliers. PLC controllers, remote I/O, industrial communication modules, sensors, power monitoring equipment, control panels, and DCS components can all play important roles in modern critical infrastructure.

The broader industry trend is clear: AI is not only increasing demand for computing power; it is also increasing demand for reliable automation systems capable of controlling the physical infrastructure behind that computing power.

As global data center capacity continues to expand, integrated PLC and DCS architectures may become increasingly important for managing power, cooling, equipment status, alarms, and operational performance.

For the automation industry, Emerson’s latest announcement demonstrates how industrial control technology is expanding beyond traditional factories and process plants into new infrastructure applications driven by AI.
