AI-Assisted PLC Research Highlights Growing Industrial Cybersecurity Risks

Artificial intelligence is creating new opportunities for industrial automation, but recent cybersecurity research also demonstrates how AI could make some aspects of PLC vulnerability research faster and more accessible.

Researchers have demonstrated that AI assistance can help with the process of adapting an existing remote code execution exploit from one programmable logic controller to another. Although significant human expertise and technical intervention were still required, the research highlights an important development for the industrial cybersecurity community.

PLCs are fundamental components of modern industrial control systems. They control motors, pumps, valves, conveyors, production equipment and other critical processes. If an attacker gains unauthorized control of a PLC, the potential impact can extend far beyond conventional IT systems.

Industrial facilities are also becoming increasingly connected. PLCs now commonly communicate with HMIs, SCADA platforms, engineering workstations, historians and enterprise networks. This connectivity improves production visibility and remote management, but it can also increase the potential attack surface.

The growing use of AI adds another dimension to this challenge. Security professionals can use AI to analyze logs, identify abnormal network behavior and accelerate vulnerability assessment. At the same time, attackers may potentially use AI to assist with technical research and exploit development.

For automation engineers, this means cybersecurity should be considered during the design and maintenance of PLC and DCS systems rather than treated as a separate IT issue.

Industrial networks should be properly segmented, and unnecessary connections between operational technology and corporate IT networks should be restricted. Engineering workstations and remote access systems should also receive particular attention because they can provide pathways toward critical controllers.

Accurate asset inventories are another important requirement. Operators need to know which PLCs, communication modules, HMIs and engineering systems are installed, what firmware they use and how they communicate with other equipment.

Regular monitoring can also help identify unusual activity. Unexpected PLC programming changes, unfamiliar network connections or abnormal engineering access should be investigated quickly.

As artificial intelligence becomes more capable, the industrial cybersecurity landscape will continue to evolve. The same technology that helps manufacturers improve productivity may also change how vulnerabilities are discovered and exploited.

For PLC, DCS and industrial automation professionals, cybersecurity is therefore becoming an essential part of modern control engineering. Future automation systems will need to combine real-time control, connectivity, intelligent functions and strong cybersecurity protection.

The goal is not simply to make industrial systems smarter. They must also remain reliable, controllable and secure throughout their operational life.
