Rockwell Automation has expanded its ControlLogix platform with the ControlLogix 5590 controller, introducing increased processing capacity, memory, networking, motion control, safety, and cybersecurity capabilities for demanding industrial automation applications.

The new controller is designed for complex manufacturing environments where multiple automation functions need to operate within a coordinated control architecture. The ControlLogix 5590 provides up to 80 MB of memory and supports more than 600 Ethernet nodes per controller, providing additional capacity for large-scale automation systems.
Motion control is another important feature. The controller can support up to 512 real and virtual motion axes, making it suitable for applications involving robotics, packaging equipment, high-speed machinery, and synchronized production processes.
The ControlLogix 5590 also provides dual EtherNet/IP ports and supports common industrial network configurations. This can help engineers develop flexible network architectures while reducing the amount of additional communication hardware required in certain applications.
Safety and cybersecurity are increasingly important in modern PLC systems. The controller incorporates integrated safety capabilities and supports security technologies designed to protect industrial control environments. Secure boot and CIP Security capabilities can help address cybersecurity requirements in connected manufacturing facilities.
Engineering and simulation capabilities are also an important part of the ControlLogix ecosystem. Engineers can use modern programming and design tools to develop, test, and validate control applications before deploying them to production equipment.
The controller is designed for process, batch, discrete, and hybrid automation applications. Compatibility with existing ControlLogix systems can also support modernization projects where manufacturers want to upgrade control performance without completely redesigning their automation architecture.

The introduction highlights a broader trend in PLC technology. Modern controllers are increasingly combining logic control, motion, safety, networking, cybersecurity, and digital engineering capabilities within a unified platform.
For manufacturers and system integrators, high-performance PLC platforms such as the ControlLogix 5590 provide new possibilities for developing scalable, connected, and intelligent industrial automation systems.
