Siemens and Procter & Gamble are expanding the use of an AI-based quality inspection solution across manufacturing operations worldwide. The technology combines industrial artificial intelligence, edge computing and machine vision to inspect products in real time during high-speed production.

The solution, known as the Visual Inspection Cockpit, is designed for manufacturing environments where products and packaging can change frequently. Traditional machine vision systems may require significant configuration when materials, packaging designs or production conditions change. An AI-based approach can provide greater flexibility when dealing with variations in product appearance.

The technology is designed to provide inspection coverage at production speed while helping manufacturers improve quality consistency. In some applications, the companies have reported reductions in production scrap, demonstrating the potential of AI-based inspection for automated quality control.

The system combines deep-learning models with Siemens Industrial Edge technology, industrial PCs equipped with NVIDIA GPUs, and AI hardware and software. This architecture allows inspection and data-processing functions to operate closer to the production line instead of relying entirely on remote computing infrastructure.

For automation engineers, an important aspect is the integration between AI inspection and existing control systems. The solution can integrate with PLC-based production equipment, allowing products identified with quality problems to be automatically rejected during high-speed manufacturing processes.

The development demonstrates how industrial AI is becoming increasingly connected with PLCs, edge computing, machine vision and production control systems. For manufacturers, combining AI inspection with established automation platforms provides a practical path toward more adaptive and data-driven quality control.

As smart manufacturing continues to develop, AI-enabled inspection systems are expected to become increasingly important in automated production lines, especially in industries with high product variety and demanding quality requirements.
