Siemens And P&G Expand AI-Based Quality Inspection Across Global Manufacturing

Siemens and Procter & Gamble (P&G) are expanding the deployment of an AI-based quality inspection solution across P&G manufacturing operations worldwide, highlighting the growing role of Industrial AI, machine vision and edge computing in high-speed production environments.

The solution, known as the Visual Inspection Cockpit (VIC), is designed to inspect products in real time while production lines continue operating at full speed. Unlike traditional machine vision applications that may require extensive reconfiguration when products, packaging materials or production conditions change, the AI-based system is designed to handle greater variation in manufacturing processes.

The technology combines P&G’s deep-learning models with Siemens Industrial Edge technology, industrial PCs and AI hardware and software. Inspection data is processed close to production equipment, allowing quality information to be analyzed with low latency and enabling automated responses within the manufacturing process.

The companies report that the system has helped reduce scrap rates by approximately 10% to 20%, depending on the product. New installations can also be commissioned significantly faster than traditional customized vision systems.

The development is particularly relevant to manufacturers operating high-speed production lines where manual inspection can be difficult to scale. Products made from flexible, textured or variable materials can change shape or position during production, creating challenges for conventional rule-based inspection systems.

For PLC and industrial automation engineers, the integration between AI vision, edge computing and control systems is an important development. Inspection results can be connected directly with manufacturing control processes, allowing the system to identify quality problems and trigger actions such as operator alerts or automatic product rejection.

The wider trend shows that AI inspection is moving toward practical industrial applications rather than remaining limited to experimental projects. As manufacturers seek to improve production efficiency, reduce material waste and maintain consistent quality, the combination of PLC control, industrial networking, machine vision and edge AI is becoming increasingly important in modern smart factories.
